The castle is a Ganerbenburg, or a castle belonging to a community of joint owners. The Platteltz, or Romanesque keep is the oldest part of the castle. In 1472 the Rubenach house was completed. The Rodendorf house was constructed between 1490 and 1540 and around 1530 the Kempenich house was completed. Eltz Castle is situated within a small wooded vally, and stands in the middle of a basin perched on a rocky crag. The river Eltz almost loops entirely around the crag providing a strong defensive position.
“With the first glimpse of Eltz Castle, one can only say WOW! This amazing castle built in the 12th Century has never been sacked or burnt and has continuously owned by a branch of the Graf von Eltz family for 33 generations. It is surely one of the architectural wonders of the world. I felt such remarkable structure demanded careful accuracy of detail when excuting this painting.”
