An island in the centre of the Nile at Aswan, Elephantine was the original “border town” between Upper and Lower Egypt. unified by Menes in 3100 BC, the Nubian lands to the south were in ancient times and important strategic position both for the defence of the border and as a trading route.
The island has been inhabited from the early Dynastic period through Roman times until the present day. It’s ancient name was “abu” or “yebu”, which means elephant and was derived from the shape of the smooth water-worn grew boulders which surround the island, resembling elephants in the water.
“A typical street in the ancient village of Siou. The house depicted in the centre, as with many in the village, has been occupied by the same Nubian family and their descendants for the page 350 years.”
