Lying about 25 miles west of Mt.Aspiring, Red Mountain is part of the Red Hills, which are formed of a peridotite or dunite. Because of the high iron content and being deficient in a number of minerals, no vegetation grows on them.
In the early 1970’s asbestos prospectors camped near the Pyke River, at the base of Red Mountain, South Westland. Helicopters serviced the camp while the prospectors worked higher up the slopes. The area now forms part of Mt Aspiring National Park.
“At the head of the Red Pyke and Cascade Rivers stands Red Mountain. This is one of my favourite areas to paint in. I have spent many exhilarating trips tramping and camping in these mountains in the quest for new subjects to paint.”
