Charles Edward Douglas (1840-1916) or “Mr Explorer Douglas” made an epic journey traversing the northern Olivine Range and travelled up the Waiatoto River, smoking his pipe and with Betsy-Jane his dog for company, in 1891.
“This rapid successfully blocks any travel by jet boat up the Waiatoto River beyond this point. Here I suspect Charles Douglas was probably “smoking his pipe” furiously to ward off the ravages of Te Ngamu which also makes painting “in situ” virtually impossible in this valley.”
