An oast, oast house (or oasthouse) or hop kiln is a building designed for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process. These distinctive structures are most commonly found in hop growing regions of the UK (Oast meaning Kiln in old English), particularly in Kent and Sussex which were historically the heart of the hop growing industry. In Kent, the “Garden of England,” the hop fields stretch across the Weald, a region between London and the coast. This area was particularly important during the 18th and 19th centuries, when Kent was the leading producer of hops in England.
Jonathan travelled on numerous occasions throughout Europe and the United Kingdom – sketching, photographing and painting subjects that were challengingly contrasting to the New Zealand wilderness. With family located in Kent, England, a few select works of the Kent region were produced.
