During the summer season of 1989-1990 Jonathan was asked to visit Antarctica with the New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme to execute a series of paintings of the Historic buildings and the Dry Valleys Region of the Antarctic Continent. The “Antarctica Series” of paintings and sketches were produced following this trip, including Scott Base and the scenery of Antarctica. Exhibitions of Jonathan’s Antarctic work (opened by Sir Edmund Hillary) were consecutively held throughout New Zealand and helped raised funds for the Antarctic Heritage Trust.
A select few of this series were retained by the artist, including this piece residing in his personal gallery. In 2023 Jonathan was included in a book titled “Artists in Antarctica” by Patrick Shepherd and Massey Press.
The Olympus Range is a mountain range located in Victoria Land, Antarctica, situated between the Victoria and McKelvey Valleys to the north and the Wright Valley to the south. It is characterised by peaks over 2,000 meters high and is largely ice-free. The name of the range is a reference to Mount Olympus, and it is named for Charles S. Wright.
